Gunnar Christiansen "Help Me - I Have a Mental Illness!!"

What should you say and do when someone tells you she has a mental illness? Or one in her family? This session is for those who know very little about mental illness but would like to have direction in how they can more effectively "reach out" to those with these disorders and their families.
Dr. Gunnar Christiansen earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University in 1956 and achieved his M.D. and Masters Degree from the University of Oregon Medical School in 1961. He has been a Board Certified Ophthalmologist practicing in Anaheim, California for 29 years. He is serving as the Chairman of the California Alliance for the Mentally Ill's Outreach to the Faith Community ("FAITH-NET"). He is the First Vice President of the California Alliance for the Mentally Ill and is the Regional Representative for Southern California for the Presbyterian Serious Mental Illness Network (PSMIN).

Dr. Christiansen, a retired board certified ophthalmologist, was initially the founding chairman and is now co-chairman of FaithNet NAMI and editor of the FaithNet NAMI E-Mail Network, which is distributed nationally.
He has been active in advocacy for the benefit of those affected by mental illness for the past 15 years at a local, state and national level.He has lectured throughout the United States and is past president of NAMI California.He is currently the Southern California representative for the Presbyterian Serious Mental Illness Network.At a local level, he continues to serve on the advisory board for NAMI Orange County and in 2002 was designated the "Volunteer of the Year" by both the Orange County Mental Health Association and NAMI Orange County.
Gunnar and his wife, Susan, have four adult children one of whom has schizophrenia.
