Gretchen Letterman, lifestyle editor for the St. Petersburg Times in St. Petersburg, Fla., welcomed the study's findings. "It was just really a reminder of what we already know and what we sometimes don't take the time to do ... you've got to keep writing those pieces and promoting what you've got and letting readers get excited in advance," she said.

Manager Gretchen Letterman is a journalist with 25 years' experience at the St. Petersburg Times. Before leading the Times' NIE program, she held a variety of newsroom positions including editorial writer and lifestyles editor. In that role, she worked closely with the NIE program to produce its in-paper features and also supervised the Times' X-Team, the group of student reporters ages 9-18, for six years. Her interest in the role newspapers play in developing literacy at all ages was fueled by teaching these young writers and mentoring journalism students at Melrose Elementary School in St. Petersburg. She serves as the chair of the community based Midtown Journalism Project Advisory Committee, supporting local journalism magnet schools that use NIE in classroom and home literacy programs. As part of the Times' Audience Development team, Letterman and the rest of the NIE staff are committed to transforming the NIE program into the leading electronic resource for teachers and students. Before coming to the Times, she worked at the Wichita (Kansas) Eagle as news editor.Though she has enjoyed all her positions at the Times, directing the newspaper in education program is easily her favorite: Getting kids to learn with the newspaper has a positive impact on their reading and other literacy scores, to say nothing of establishing lifelong newspaper reading habits.Letterman, who often speaks at national and state NIE conferences, was honored by the Times as its 2005 Circulation Executive of the Year, and has served on the advisory board for Kids Voting Tampa Bay since 2004.She holds bachelor's degrees in journalism and psychology from Indiana University.Contact Gretchen at

MUNCIE -- The last time Gretchen Letterman visited Ball State University, she watched the university dedicate the David Letterman Communication and Media Building, named after her brother.
But Letterman has had more than 30 years experience in journalism and was asked by the BSU Department of Journalism to be a guest lecturer for the department's Professional-in-Residence series. She was scheduled to speak to students about "The News about Newspapers" Monday and was expected to appear in classrooms today.
"I'm just thrilled to be on a campus that is so vibrant in its training in communications," she said, adding that she was most looking forward to having a dialogue with the students.
"I feel like I'm going to learn a lot from the students here," she said.
Letterman is the new editorial/creative director for Times Targeted Media. She has only been on the job for about four weeks, she said, but she's already helping to develop niche publications for the company.
Besides working with students this week, Letterman, who lives in Florida, got a chance to visit with her mother in Indianapolis. Letterman grew up there with her parents, older sister and brother, David.
