Probably no single generic particulate emission category spans a broader range of source conditions than vehicular travel over unpaved surfaces.Included are not only the public unpaved roads common throughout rural parts of the country, but also those roads traveled by very large trucks used in heavy industry such as surface mining operations.Some roads - such as those at landfills, mines, and construction sites - may exist for only a short period of time.National inventories of particulate matter show that dust emissions from unpaved roads are a major source category.

This paper describes a series of field tests of particulate matter (PM) from two industrial facilities located at the Port of Tubarão, Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brazil.Tests occurred at (a) an integrated iron and steel plant operated by Companhia Siderurgica de Tubarão (CST) and (b) a large facility operated by Companhahia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), which includes iron ore pelletizing and marine shipping operations.
