Greg Lyons was a Senior Member of the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) from January 1999 until November 2006. He holds the degrees of LL.B.(Hons) from the University of Melbourne and Ph.D. from Monash University (Faculty of Law). Greg is a Senior Fellow of the Faculty of Law, University of Melbourne. Greg has a strong interest in alternative dispute resolution and was VCAT's inaugural Principal Mediator from 1999 - 2003. At VCAT, Greg worked principally in the Anti-Discrimination and Guardianship Lists, both hearing cases and conducting mediations.
Prior to his appointment to VCAT, Greg was Victoria's Electoral Commissioner from 1989 - 1999 with responsibility for conducting Victorian State elections and by-elections, and a range of municipal and other elections. During this period he was also a member of Victoria's Electoral Boundaries Commission. He has held the position of Assistant Director, Justice Branch, Department of the Premier and Cabinet, and has worked as a solicitor in private practice and for the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service. Greg was a founding co-editor of the Aboriginal Law Bulletin (now the Indigenous Law Bulletin) and a founding director of Victoria's Aboriginal Child Care Agency.

But while finding the interview process was "flawed" and "unsatisfactory" because of its rigid structure and inability to ask follow-up questions, Tribunal Senior Member Greg Lyons said he did not find it discriminatory. Each panel member denied the man had mentioned a prior injury or WorkCover history, and said they had rejected him because he had refused to multi-skill or be flexible.SM Lyons noted this was at odds with the man's answer to another question that he was a flexible worker."Questions which should have been asked were not asked and information which should have been uncovered was not uncovered," he said.SM Lyons was unclear how the company knew of the man's WorkCover history. But, he accepted evidence from an Aust Manufacturing Workers Union organiser who had rung Prix's HR manager to find out why the worker had been unsuccessful, and was "dumbfounded" when told it was because of the WorkCover history.

Greg Lyons—Ohio
In Lima I spoke with an elderly woman who was reluctant to join because she was distrustful of people coming to her door. I could see she wasn't comfortable so I politely thanked her and went on my way.
Later that night I was on her street doing call backs, she saw me, called me over and became a member. She said of I were that committed I must be working on something important. I know that being polite earlier in the night had impressed her and gave me the opportunity to later sign her up as a member.
