promoted to Mazda global communications job

A longtime employee of Mazda Canada, headquartered in Richmond Hill, has been promoted to global head of corporate communications in Hiroshima, Japan.
Toronto resident Gregory Young
, 55, took over as general manager of global corporate communications July 2.
comes from inside the Mazda
company and his
promotion is rare in a firm that usually appoints Japanese to the high-level positions.
He was initially hired by Mazda in 1991 to start the company's public relations operations in Canada.
moved to Japan in 2011 to take on the position of deputy general manager of corporate communications.
builds 70 percent of its cars in Japan, but overseas sales account for 83 percent of its global total.
promotion aims in part to promote better communication with that customer base.
A child of Canadian missionaries who grew up in South Korea, he's a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan and University of Toronto.
speaks English, Korean and is learning Japanese.
