Greg Mulholland
Greg's Biography
...
Greg Mulholland has been the Liberal Democrat MP for Leeds North West since 2005.
He entered Parliament after winning the seat from Labour at the 2005 General Election. He lives here in the constituency with his wife Raegan and his daughters Isabel, Madeleine and Ava.
...
In Parliament, Greg has been part of several all-party groups including being Chair of the Save the Pub Group, the Rugby League Group and the Paediatric Mobility Reform group, as well as being co-chair of the Ageing and Older People Motor Neuron Disease and balanced and sustainable communities groups. Greg has also been part of other groups including the Hospice and Palliative Care, Light Rail and Dentistry groups.
In November 2005, he proposed the Sale of Green Belt Land bill to prevent 'land banking' - companies speculating in Green Belt land. In 2008 Greg introduced his Wine Glass Measures Bill to give wine drinkers better choice of wine glass sizes, so that smaller measures would be available as well as the much larger sizes that are often the thing on offer. The Government announced that it planned to introduce the bill and the Home Secretary agreed to meet with Greg to discuss this. More recently Greg, as chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Save the Pub Group, has been a leading figure on large Pub Company reform and changes to planning law to protect pubs. He has held Westminster Hall debates, as well as questioning Ministers and large pub companies. Greg has also lead a campaign irrecoverable VAT for charities providing health services, this included a meeting with Treasury Minister David Gauke MP.
blank In 2007, Greg was nominated for best Campaigning Politician of Year in the Channel 4 Political Awards, for helping to secure the release of Mirza Tahir Hussain from death row in Pakistan.
...
Locally, Greg has also led a community campaign in support of the Wharfedale Hospital in Otley. After one of the wards closed in 2009, Greg held public meetings and collected 5000 signatures on a petition calling for an end to further cuts. Following the decision to close the last remaining elderly patients ward in June 2011, the campaign was reignited, with another public meeting and petition in an effort to secure the long term future of the hospital.
Greg has also recently been working closely with the 'Friends of Spring Gardens' and families of residents at the home campaigning to keep the home open following the announcement that the home may close as part of a raft of closures across the city.
Greg has been active in working with the Police and local groups to cut crime and anti-social behaviour. He campaigned successfully against the downgrading of Otley Police Station in 2006.
Greg is very active in his Leeds North West Constituency. He regularly visits schools, local groups and residents associations. His 'mini parliaments' in schools are very popular and he also encourages groups and schools to visit him in Parliament.
Greg has held eight scheduled surgeries every month, more than any previous Leeds North West MP as well as special surgeries which have been held in community centres and also caravan parks and pubs.
He also works hard to promote local charities such as Kids in Kampz and Leeds Youth Opera - both of which he is a patron of.
