Mrs. Elliott was born Sept. 18, 1917, in Franklin, Mont., to Grant and Viola Petit.While Mr. Gatlin served in the Navy during World War II, Mrs. Gatlin lived with her parents at Sonnette and helped on the ranch.After the war, she and her husband spent a year in Valdez, Alaska, where he worked on a fishing boat.They returned from Alaska and worked on various ranches in southeastern Montana and later operated the Corral Bar in Birney, Mont. After Mr. Gatlin was elected Powder River County sheriff, Mrs. Gatlin worked as jail cook and, later, dispatcher for the sheriff's office, without pay for the first years until the county hired her.After her husband's tenure as sheriff ended, she worked at the IGA Bakery.She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984 and one grandson.

Grant Gatlin courted Betty through her high school years and they were married on November 1, 1941.
While Grant served in the Navy during WWII, Betty lived with her parents at Sonnette and helped on the ranch. Together they ran the Corral Bar in Birney, MT. In 1960, Grant took the job of Town Marshall in Broadus and was later elected Sheriff of Powder River County. Betty's family and friends recall how proud Grant was of her strength and mental toughness.
