I remember it being kind of exciting," added Grant Chun, a 1979 graduate.
He had come from Kahului School and was accustomed to the area's hot and dry climate. In addition to its new facilities, the new school gave students a chance to make new friends because it combined students drawn from Upcountry with those from Kahului. (Now, Upcountry students attend King Kekaulike High School.) "It was kind of fun. It was almost like you going to college," said Chun, who enjoyed meeting new people. Chun, a former managing director for Maui County and now vice president of A&B Properties, also remembers the earth sculpture as well as the sculpture of trees also next to the administration building. He said he remembers being told the sculpture meant "growth" and the spreading of one's wings.
