He was president and CEO of the Akron Community Foundation from July 1990 to May 1992.
Active in community affairs, he serves as a trustee of The Cleveland Clinic Foundation and Mount Union College.He served as a Goodyear Executive Professor of Business Administration at Kent State University from 1988 to 1990.
He began his banking career in July 1949 with the former Peoples National Bank of Charlottesville, Va., now affiliated with Bank of America.He was a security analyst and assistant to the bank president.
Moving to Cleveland in 1951 as a security analyst and assistant to the senior investment officer at National City Bank, he was vice president at National City when he accepted a position with the First National Bank of Alliance, Ohio.In 1963, he was elected president and chief executive officer of the Goodyear Bank of Akron and held that position for 11 years until 1974 when he joined Society.
A member of the U.S. Navy during World War II, he attended Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J., and was graduated from the University of Virginia.

Gordon Emory Heffern, the former chairman of the board of the Society Corp. bank, was noted for his commitment to business ethics in a 37-year career.
The 83-year-old former Akron resident died Monday at the Cleveland Clinic.
After years of working in Akron, he relocated to the Cleveland area and resided in Highland Heights.When he retired in 1987 at age 63, he spent winters in Bonita Springs, Fla.
Mr. Heffern established the first code of ethics for Society National Bank in 1974, which was used as a national model for all banks by the American Banking Association."A code of ethics is only a piece of paper if not put into practice from the top CEO," he told students at Mount Union College in a lecture in 2004."A code of ethics must be a high priority in an organization."
He emphasized to students entering the business world that integrity and character are the most important principles in life.
A strong supporter of higher education, he served as the Goodyear Executive Professor of Business Administration at Kent State University, was a trustee of Mount Union College and chairman of the board of trustees of John Carroll University.
Mr. Heffern grew up as a farm boy in Cooperstown, Pa. After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy during World War II.He attended the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J., and graduated from the University of Virginia with a bachelor of science degree in commerce.
He not only was competitive in the banking field but also in sports.
He enjoyed golf, tennis and racketball.While he was interested in sports, he admitted he was never very good at them.
But Mr. Heffern ended up channeling his interest in sports in another direction.
