Mission View and Desert Sands charter schools are economically connected, meaning Hart district board member Gloria Mercado-Fortine could have a conflict of interest, according to an independent report ordered by the Hart district board and obtained by The Signal.
The May report stems from the board's investigation into William S. Hart Union High School District board member Mercado-Fortine for a potential conflict. Board members Steve Sturgeon and Joe Messina have said that Mercado-Fortine's employment with Desert Sands constitutes a conflict of interest because of the Hart district's charter with Mission View. Mercado-Fortine has denied any wrongdoing, saying she abstains from votes related to charter schools, as advised by legal counsel. She has said that as vice president of education for Desert Sands, she is not involved in the day-to-day finances of the charter schools. Mercado-Fortine is listed in that position for Desert Sands, and Maria Trejo is listed as vice president of education for Mission View. But I thought this whole thing had no merit and was an attack on Gloria because she is a woman and hispanic, as she stated before. I hope they kick her out for her racist statement, and then we vote the other two out for the ludicrous retirement package they voted on for the superintendent. It seems to me that Messina and Sturgeon want Gloria off the board and they are quietly setting the stage to have a few of their pals run.
