Gloria Mercado-Fortine, a longtime educator, community volunteer and school district trustee, will attempt to bring her lifetime commitment to education and public service to the Santa Clarita City Council when she runs for an open seat in April 2014.
"I know that I'm declaring my candidacy a little early, but I believe that making a decision now rather than later will make it clear to everyone how serious I am about seeking to represent our community and make a difference in people's lives," Mercado-Fortine said. "I gave this decision much thought, ultimately concluding that it's a logical step in my pursuit of serving the community I love."
Mercado-Fortine is a lifelong resident of the Santa Clarita Valley and a graduate of the William S. Hart Union High School District, for which she is currently serving a fourth term as a member of its Governing Board. She previously served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Castaic Union School District and as a member of the Castaic Town Council.
A key goal during her service to the Hart District was to provide a long-awaited high school that the Castaic community could call its own. The high school project is well on its way to becoming reality, with an anticipated opening in August 2015.
"It was a long, difficult process, but we prevailed and Castaic will soon have its own high school," Mercado-Fortine said. "I'm proud to have played a key role in bringing this project to the forefront and ensuring that it was pursued to completion. It's a dream come true for a community that prides itself on providing the very best educational opportunities for all."
A former teacher, counselor, principal and school district administrator, Mercado-Fortine has spent a lifetime in the educational arena. She is keenly aware of the importance of education in people's lives, as well as volunteerism, community service and passionate advocacy. She has devoted her time and leadership to numerous charitable causes and organizations, such as the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley, the SCV Child & Family Center, the Samuel Dixon Health & Family Center, the SCV Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the SCV Anti-Gang Task Force, and the YMCA of Santa Clarita Valley.
Mercado-Fortine identified several challenges that must be resolved, such as cleanup of the former Whittaker-Bermite munitions site, stopping the Cemex open-pit gravel mine, helping local businesses and entrepreneurs thrive, improving the city's road network, reducing crime, and eliminating the growing use of drugs and alcohol by our young people.
"All great communities have great schools as their foundation," she said.
