Gloria Freeman Gloria Freeman, founder and chief executive officer of Minneapolis-based Olu's Home, Inc. and Olu's Center, saw a critical need for community-based services, has dedicated her career to helping fill that need, and in the process become a successful entrepreneur.
In 1999, Gloria founded Olu's Home, a licensed care organization that provides residential and in-home services to the elderly and persons with developmental disabilities or mental illness. The company operates nine group homes in the Minneapolis area.
Gloria's desire to serve those with disabilities and mental illness has roots in her childhood. Her mother was a prominent public speaker and advocate for the mentally ill, and Gloria recalls accompanying her mother on assistant housing visits.
Soon after opening her first group home in North Minneapolis, Gloria realized she had found her calling in helping those with developmental disabilities and mental illness live as fully and independently as they are able.
Working with health and social services professionals from a variety of disciplines, she also quickly understood the importance of providing a holistic, integrated menu of services to support each client's physical, mental, social, and spiritual needs. That also means helping clients learn to take care of themselves, and function in the community.
While developing her business, Gloria has continued her education by participating in the Small Business Administration's Emerging Leaders Initiative, an intensive, MBA-level training program for executives of high-potential, small businesses in America's under-served cities. In 2014, the national Initiative for A Competitive Inner City recognized Olu's Home, on its annual, Inner City 100 list of fastest-growing, inner city companies in the U.S. Gloria Freeman has also been honored by the Minnesota Black Chamber of Commerce. Gloria Freeman, a laid-off insurance underwriter turned entrepreneur 15 years ago, is the owner of Olu's Home. Today Olu's, an African word Freeman interprets as "praising God,'' is composed of nine Twin Cities group homes that employ 100 and serve those with developmental disabilities, brain injuries and mental illness.

Perseverance and networking also paid off for Gloria Freeman, who started Olu's Home, a company providing residential and in-home care to the disabled and elderly, after she was laid off from an insurance company 15 years ago. Once a shoestring startup, the business now has 90 employees and runs nine residential care centers in Minneapolis.
As an African-American woman, Freeman latched on to every local and regional nonprofit and government support group she could find as her business grew. "I would go to their events and become a big supporter of what they were doing," she says. She recently got a $1.2 million loan to buy and renovate a building that she plans to open this month as an intergenerational care center, bringing together elderly clients with neighborhood children needing day care.
