Although women make up half the population worldwide, they're still only a small percentage of elected leaders, which is a problem because it means that the voices of half the population aren't being heard adequately at the highest levels of government, said Glenys Hanna-Martin, Bahamas minister of transport and aviation.
Ms. Hanna-Martin, who is also the regional chair of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians, was speaking to fellow female elected leaders at The Moorings Mariner Inn Saturday morning at the start of a two-day conference for female parliamentarians from the Americas and Caribbean. She said that in her time serving as the organisation's chair, she's learned a lot about the challenges women face. She added that while recent generations of women have seen "incredible achievements and great progress," the issue of inequity when it comes to political power remains.
