Glenn Premru brings Grand Master Hohan Soken and Master Fusei Kise to the United States. (First and only trip for Grand Master Hohan Soken) ( See article ).
Sensei Coffman is reunited with Grand Master Soken and Master Kise.
Sensei Coffman enters Premru's tournament in Philadelphia, Pa. to show his
is still active and proficient.
Sensei Coffman is requested by his
teachers, Grand Master Soken, Master Kise, to be head of the newly formed OKF
(Okinawan Karate Federation) in conjunction with Glenn Premru
The OKF web page (okf1956.org.com) clearly states that Glenn R Premru received his black belt in 1959 in Goju ryu under Mr. Larry Williams.
most notable student is Glenn Premru
Master Hamilton is the senior student of Glenn R. Premru
Summer 1998 OKF newsletter has a photo of Mr. Premru
with the caption "10th dan Shorin ryu Matsumura Seito Karate do: 9th dan Shorin ryu mtsumura seito kobudo"
The OKF web page currently states (Jan 18, 2003)...."He (Premru) is currenly ranked as a 10th degree black belt under Shorin ryu Matsumura Orthodox karate system as well as 9th dan kobudo under Soken."
Now, in a letter to me dated Jan. 16, 2003 he
claims...."For the record, I never claimed that I was teaching or even was promoted within the Matsumura karate do system" he
goes on to say "in any case Rick, I would like to set the record straight with you and other individuals who have been grossly misinformed.
As for my knowledge in Matsumura Orthodox Shorin ryu (as it was called then) I have always stated and also stated at the OKF reunion that I hosted in Scottsdale, Arizona at my own expense at the Grand Hyatt at Gainey Ranch, I AM THE INDIVIDUAL AT THAT MEETING THAT I HOSTED WHO WAS THE LEAST QUALIFIED AND RECEIVED THE LEAST AMOUNT OF KNOWLEDGE TO HEAD ANY MATSUMURA ORGANIZATION
" and "I HAVE NEVER IN MY LIFETIME CLAIMED TO BE SOMETHING THAT I AM NOT"
Now again let us go back to the OKF newsletter winter 1996....A full page article on Mr. Premru
stated "There's only one Soke in the world, and its Premru", "When in comes to karate, he's
the worlds best" and finally "Premru, Soke of Matsumura Shorin ryu".
The same article mentions 5 others inducted as SOKE as well???
From the 1995 OKF membership portfolio, Mr. Premru's bio clearly states 'On June 11, 1972 Grandmaster Soken appointed Master Premru as the chairman and president of the newly formed OKF.
Master Premru was also promoted to the rank of 8th degree black belt on this date.
It also states "Prior to his
death in the fall of 1982 Grandmaster Soken promoted Master Premru to the honorary rank of 10th dan" also " He
is currently ranked 10th degree black belt under the Matsumura Shorin ryu Okinawan Karate system.
web page also states that "June 11, 1972 Sokon promotes Premru
to 8th dan."
also states in his OKF
web site that "We are not a diploma mill.
Then on the same web page he
offers several certificates and 10 bogus Japanese titles for sale, charging hundreds of dollars.
Now again in a letter to me dated Jan. 17, 2003 Mr. Premru
says "Now, I am being faulted for establishing a diploma mill because I am giving out title certificates for money.
Was this not established by certain Okinawan instructors, only for thousands of dollars?
Were not unqualified students advanced from ni-dan and san-dan to roku dan and above, just because they had the ability to pay thousands (not hundreds) of dollars in promotion fees?
Please give me a break.
This tradition came from and was established on the Island of Okinawa itself."
It is my humble opinion that all of us "misinformed individuals" are a product of information made public by Glenn R. Premru
has made public many contradicting claims and not the other way around.
This is my response to public and private claims made by OKF
and Glenn R. Premru
These are my opinions and questions alone, although shared by many.
This is not malicious , slanderous or mean spirited but rather a search for the truth.
Although Mr. Premru
is an outstanding kata-karate ka, I find his
public information to be misleading and less than truthful.

GLENN R. PREMRU ( 1942- ) Considered by most to be one of the all time great Karate Pioneers , American karate competitor , performer and instructor.Premru began his formal karate training at the YMCA in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania in 1956 under the direction of Mr. Larry Williams , A Goju-Ryu stylist.During his high school years , he also studied Isshin-Ryu and Shotokan Karate. He was promoted by Williams to Black Belt in 1959.
While in the United States Marine Corps he
trained in the Shorin-Ryu style under Sgt.
competed for eleven years , from 1964 to 1975 , one of only a handful of Americans to participate in his
art for more than a decade.A consistent karate and weapons kata winner , Premru
won first place in 1971 weapons titles of both the USKA Grand Nationals and Ed Parker's Internationals.Premru
specialized in empty-hands forms , however , and on seven occasions received perfect scores – straight tens – from the five judges. He
was named one of America's top 10 form competitors in the 1973 Official Karate Yearbook , the first set of national kata ratings for the sport.Premru
was and still is considered one of the first great karate showmen , putting together touring demonstration teams and memorable dramatic and comedy routines.Even after his
retirement from competition , he
presented an unusual solo comedy routine at the 1976 Battle of Atlanta , which brought the house down and resulted in a ten minute standing ovation.

As a performer , Premru
is perhaps best known for his
Meeting of the Samurai , a masterful skit depicting humor , drama , and conflict between two opposing samurai groups. The routine has fostered countless imitations , but his
performance has never been duplicated by anyone……….
In 1972 , Premru
organized and hosted an historic U.S. visit by Grandmaster Hohan Soken of the Matsumura Orthodox style and his
then senior ranking student , Fusei Kise.In one promotional event , Soken exchanged a pair of his
kama ( sickles ) for a baseball with the late Roberto Clemente , before a capacity crowd at Three Rivers Stadium , Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania. On June 11 , 1972 Hohan Soken O'Sensei appointed Premru Sensei , not only to be the President of the newly re-organized Okinawan Karate Federation ( Okinawa Karate-Do Renmei ) , but also bestowed the authority to act on his behalf as international ambassador for the unification of Okinawa's martial arts legacy
.This was the first time ever , in Okinawa martial arts history , that such an honor has been bestowed to a non Okinawan Karate/Kobudo instructor.
As an instructor , Premru
owned and operated various karate schools in and around Pittsburgh from 1966 – 1973.His
most noted student is Master John Hamilton of Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania.
In 1994 the Okinawan Karate Federation
underwent yet another re-organization at the direction of Soke Premru.New Promotional and Membership Certificates were issued and old non-supportive members were dropped from the active rosters.A very large number of Black Belts worldwide were asked to resign from the OKF
, due to their conflicting political postures concerning the promotion of their own styles/systems with very little concern for the classical and traditional virtues of the Okinawan Martial Arts.
The Okinawan Karate-Do Renmei ( Okinawan Karate Federation
) has branch offices in Okinawa , Mainland Japan , with World Headquarters ( Sekai Hombu ) located in Scottsdale , Arizona , USA.

In recent years , the Okinawan Karate Federation
has received requests from other traditional styles and systems to be associated with the organization. Therefore , the OKF
has expanded the membership to include Associate Memberships , such as : Japanese Kenjutsu and Laido ; Japanese Karate-Do , Japanese Jujutsu , Japanese Kobujutsu ( weaponry ) and Japanese Aiki arts. Most recently , the OKF
has created an entire Chinese Martial Arts Division to accommodate those Associate Members who have a desire to adhere to the traditional martial arts training within the OKF
has kept intact , the fundamentals under which it was originally formed and that is , The Preservation of Classical & Traditional forms of Martial Arts..This fact has made the Okinawan Karate Federation
