All these efforts are geared toward "celebrating Advent as Advent, not as Christmas," remarked Ginny Miller, director of music for Sacred Heart Cathedral.
Miller noted that the Cathedral Community intentionally put its main Advent agenda into the first weekend: "This is perfect, this is the way it needs to be -- getting everybody's attention (about Advent)," she said.
Miller agreed that Advent is indeed a period of stepping back -- yet she said this takes a conscious effort, since the Christmas season's increasingly secular emphasis has us moving in the other direction with shopping, parties and such. "It's so crazy; there are such high expectations and people running themselves ragged," she said.
But Miller pointed out that the Catholic faith is countercultural, and that paying close attention to the meaning of Advent can keep one grounded with less of an emphasis on material gifts and more on those God has already given us.
"There's all these gifts around us and we're hardly noticing them," she remarked.

You can't make Lent bigger," said Ginny Miller, associate director of the diocesan Office of Liturgy.
Miller, who also serves as music coordinator at Sacred Heart Cathedral, said there are no musical preludes or postludes during Lent, and that the "Alleluia" is not said in prayer or sung in liturgy. She tends to utilize a capella singing, such as Psalm 23 ("The Lord is my shepherd ... ") during the penitential rite.
Miller further noted that Lenten liturgies tend to contain longer pauses after readings and after Communion.
"Silence is hard for people because we always have a million things going through our mind, multitasking," Miller observed."(But) it gives us time to get in touch with the God within. ...We ask ourselves, as a community, 'how am I living out my baptismal commitment?'" she said.
