In 1967, Mrs. Gertrude Burnside was elected as the second President of the ACW.Mrs. Burnside was re-elected President in 1968 and later that year she was elected President of the ACW Council at the Annual General Meeting.She had the distinct honour of being the first President of the Council from St. Agnes and the second Diocesan Council President.Mrs. Burnside was re-elected President of St. Agnes ACW again in 1969.During her term in office she, along with her officers and members, decided that they would focus on new lighting for the Church.

Gertrude Burnside - ChurchwomanE-MAIL THIS PRINT THIS Gertrude Burnside - ChurchwomanGertrude Burnside (nee Fawkes) celebrated her 89th birthday on 14th February 2007.She has been a life-long member of St. Agnes Church and still regularly attends the 7:00 a.m. Mass on Sundays.She is also an active participant in a senior citizens exercise group that meets weekly at the Gym Tennis Club. Gertrude is the eldest child of the late Edward Ronald Fawkes and his wife, the former Mildred McKinney of Inagua.When Gertrude was an infant the Fawkes family moved to the United States where her father found work as a mason.They remained in the United Stated for three years and two of Mrs. Burnside's siblings, William and Bloneva (later Mrs. Clinton Deveaux) were born in Florida.Gertrude trained as a Dispenser (Pharmacist) at the Nassau General Hospital (now the Princess Margaret Hospital).She graduated in 1937 and worked at the Hospital for a year under Chief Pharmacist, Bertram Strachan, and subsequently at Cole's Pharmacy for three years. On 3rd May 1943 Gertrude and Dr. Jackson Logan Burnside (deceased) were married at St. Agnes Church by Canon George Loran Pyfrom.Gertrude attended the St.Mrs. Burnside has clear recollections of events at St. Agnes over the past eighty years plus.She was christened by Fr. Audley Joseph Browne and has worshipped at St. Agnes during the tenure of seven (7) Rectors. In 1967, Gertrude was elected as the second President of the St. Agnes branch of the Anglican Church Women (ACW).She was re-elected President in 1968 and later that year she was elected President of the ACW Council at the Annual General Meeting.She had the distinct honour of being the first President of the Council from St. Agnes and the second Diocesan Council President.Mrs. Burnside was re-elected President of St. Agnes ACW again in 1969.During her term in office she, along with her officers and members, decided that they would focus on new lighting for the Church.The ACW raised funds to pay for the lights and today they shine brightly in our Church as a testimony to the commitment of the members. Over the years, Gertrude was also actively involved in other aspects of Church life.She was a member of the Vestry for many years and also served as President of the Girls Brigade Council for a number of years. Apart from her involvement in the Church activities, Gertrude is a former Vice President of the Bahamas YWCA and she was also an active member of the Carver Garden Club.Mrs. Burnside still resides quietly at her home in the Fort Fincastle neighbourhood - the area where she has lived for more than eighty years.
