The Spey O Mega 15 foot final was a nail biter with Ruairi Costello and Gerard Downey both casting exceptionally well whilst wading deep in fast flowing water and casting into a strong headwind, they both achieved the same distance of 141 feet 10 inches which meant a cast off.

This was eventualy won by Ruairi Costello who made a cast of 149 feet 2 inches just pipping Gerard by 4 inches.

Carron sent 3 men to compete in the prestigious JCA Class Masters International overhead and Speycasting competitions in Japan last week, Ruairi Costello, Gerard Downey and James Chalmers headed to Tokyo full of anticipation.

This final proved to be a remarkable spectacle, conditions were not ideal with a slight headwind, Gerard Downey of Carron gave a magnificent display of Speycasting into wind, showing the assembled crowd why he is the undisputed Worlds no.1 , he finished his 4 minutes with best casts of 56.50 metres and 55 metres totalling 111.50 metres to take gold closely followed by Ruairi Costello taking silver.

Gerard Downey of Carron created a piece of history at the CLA by breaking the Speycasting World Record in the Grand final on Sunday July 24th, with a magnificent cast of 70.63 metres (77.24 yards or 231foot 7 inches) and left the platform to a standing ovation from the assembled crowd. This record is remarkable and could stay for a very long time as the original Spey casting distance pioneer Alexander Grants 65 yard record stood for over 111 years, with only three people including Gerard beating it since.

The Spey O Rama has grown in stature from its humble beginnings in 2004 and is now recognised as the most prestigious and difficult competition in the World today. It demands multi casting disciplines, 40 angle changes all whilst wading deep and trying to beat the clock.
Carron held a strong presence at this years Spey O Rama and took pleasure in introducing three new members of the Carron team - Travis Johnson, Bruce Kruk and Mia Sheppard joined James Chalmers, Ruairi Costello and Gerard Downey for what turned out to be a momentus weekend.

The scores in the final were lower than in the qualifying rounds as the wind was swirling and making it very difficult to keep your casts in between the boundary lines, however this did not deter Gerard Downey as he produced an immaculate display of Speycasting winning the competition with a magnificent 161 feet 4 inch cast .
