In March, Georgette Delinois, Program Director at BFL's Secret Garden, was part of a group from St. Anastasia church in Teaneck NJ that joined the Mobile Mission 4 Haiti on a Medical/Dental/Mental Health mission.
Georgette Delinois, Director of BFL's Secret Garden Program was honored with the Francoise I. Casseus Community Leadership Award at this June's Haitians Unified for Development and Education (HUDE) 2nd Annual Benefit Gala.
After years of psychological, financial and sexual abuse, Annabelle (pictured at right with Secret Garden Director Georgette Delinois) developed a safety plan with her Secret Garden counselor, and was able to get away from her abuser and out of the dangerous situation.
"It seemed like I was in a truly hopeless situation. My husband was my green card sponsor and my abuser and I was afraid of being separated from my son, who was a baby," she said. "I found hope at the Secret Garden."
Working with VAWA (Violence Against Women Act of 1994) and legal counsel, she became a permanent resident of the USA. She is currently living in a safe home and working in administration at an investment bank. She is very present in her son's life although he does not live with her.

Georgette Delinois, Program Director at BFL's Secret Garden, made her annual trek to Haiti this spring. As President of the Haiti Solidarity Network of the North East, Delinois has done the pilgrimage for the past eleven years, reaching out with medical, dental and mental health assistance to those in need.
"This March there were thirty of us. We saw over 900 individuals and visited schools and an orphanage in Port-au-Prince where St. Anastasia, my church, sponsors twenty-one children," said Delinois.
During the mission, Delinois and her troop-which includes medical doctors, dentists, a midwife, a psychologist, lawyers, teachers and social workers-delivered school supplies and medical assistance. - News, 15 Nov 2002 [cached]
"When I look at the equation, and look at how Cubans who reach Florida are treated compared to my people, race is what I see as the difference," said Georgette Delinois, a Teaneck social worker and president of the Haiti Solidarity Network."Cubans don't look like us.Most of them look Caucasian.We are black.Look at how they treated our people, our children, and how they reacted to Elian Gonzalez."
INS officials maintain there's nothing wrong with the agency's approaches toward Cubans and Haitians.

Georgette Delinois, Director, Non-Residential Domestic Violence Program, LCSW Prior to her current position at BFL, she was the Director of the Seamen's Society for Children and Families Domestic Violence and Prevention Programs for nine years. She worked at the New York Foundling Hospital for nine years as the Coordinator of Social Work and Parent Education Training. She supervised foster care staff and worked as a foster care, adoption and preventive social worker.
