One of the pioneers of Australian motorsport, George Reed, will be the Grand Marshall at the WPS Bathurst International Motor Festival to be held at Mount Panorama over Easter.
The WPS Bathurst International Motor Festival will be held on April 13-16 at the famous Mount Panorama circuit.Promoted and managed by a joint venture between the Bathurst Regional Council and Global Entertainment Team Pty Ltd the event has gained inspiration from the world renowned Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival in the UK.
Reed contested the inaugural Australian Grand Prix around Mount Panorama in 1938 aboard a Ford Special entered by Bathurst Ford dealer Norman J Aubin.

In 1939 Reed entered an MG Q for the Bathurst race, it was imported by Bathurst businessman Leo Kelly - but the car had problems and failed to start the race.
...
The last of the Reed Specials was built in 1949, it was Monoskate (silver) in colour, and that year proved a remarkable moment for Reed with three of his Specials entered in the 1949 Easter meeting.
In 1950 local grazier Warwick Pratley won all three major races in the Monoskate Reed Special conducted at Mount Panorama, including the 1950 Bathurst 100.
Reed was accompanied by Pratley to enter two Reed Specials in the 1951 Australian Grand Prix held in Narrogin, Western Australia. At one stage Reed was leading the event with Pratley second.Unfortunately the race didn't finish with as Reed Special one-two result with Reed enduring problems handing the victory to Pratley in the red car.
"Prat (Warwick Pratley) was a brilliant driver, the best around. He had so much speed, and could read a car so well, and nurse it home if he had to," said Reed.
Shortly after the 1951 race Reed gave race driving away but post war he had became much better known as an engineer than a driver and he continued building cars and competing in club motor sport along with beloved wife Norma - now deceased - who also competed.
The majority of club events were put on by both Bathurst and Orange Light Cars Clubs - Reed was later to become a life member of the BLCC.He continued competing in club events well into his 70's, mainly the flying 1/8 on conrod straight in a variety of high powered cars including GT Falcons and many more
Reed, who was 27 when he competed in the 1938 Australian Grand Prix, is honored to be a part of the inaugural WPS Bathurst International Motor Festival this Easter as the Festival's Grand Marshall.
"I have so many great memories at Mount Panorama. It was all about fun, we really did enjoy ourselves in those days. The Festival at Easter looks like being a great weekend and I am delighted to be a part of it," said Reed.
