He is currently serving as a Professor of Global Practice at the Munk School of Global Affairs. Prior to his retirement from the Canadian Foreign Service, Haynal was Assistant Deputy Minister for the Americas in the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. Earlier DFAIT assignments include Consul General in New York (1995-1998), Head of the Departmental Policy Staff, Director General of Economic Policy and Deputy Permanent Representative to the OECD and Representative to the International Energy Agency in Paris. Other postings abroad include London and Lima, Peru. Mr. Haynal has also served as First Officer of the Priorities and Planning Secretariat in the Privy Council Office and, on Executive Exchange, as Acting Vice President (Corporate Banking) at the Head Office of the Royal Bank of Canada in Toronto.

George Haynal Professor, Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto. George Haynal is a Professor of Corporate and Diplomatic Practice at the Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto. Mr. Haynal is a career diplomat whose extensive foreign postings included service as Canadian Consul General in New York. In government, he was, successively a senior member of the Priorities and Planning Secretariat of the Privy Council (Cabinet) Office, Head of the Policy Staff and Assistant Deputy Minister for the Americas of the Canadian Foreign and Trade Ministry. He was also, on secondment, Vice President, Strategic Analysis for Corporate Banking, at the Head Office of the Royal Bank of Canada. After public service, he joined Bombardier Inc. as Vice President of International and Government Affairs. Bombardier is the world's leading supplier of rail and third largest manufacturer of civil aircraft. He retired from that position in 2012. He now serves on a number of advisory boards, and heads Broad View Inc, a strategic business consultancy.
