George Dean, group leader and co-founder of the Gospel Four, was born in Somerville, TN on June 23rd.This super-talented leader sings, produces, and composes not only for the G4 but for many other Gospel groups in the industry today. Blessed with God-given abilities, George began singing at age six and playing lead guitar some years later. His talents extended to athletics as he attended college on a baseball scholarship as a pitcher and catcher. The roles reversed again as George earned his major in music while pursuing his minor in sports education. Reflecting back on his life, George shares that" he was unable to be drafted into the Armed Services as he had one brother stationed in Korea and another stationed in Vietnam at the same time". Unbeknownst to George, the family group, The Dean Brothers, was the beginning of his "calling".He remembers that "we would sing and cut hair at the same time".The Dean Brothers would become very popular in the Somerville, TN area due to these talents. George's music career flourished in college and his college education gave him the technical aspects needed for what would become a very successful career as a songwriter. In the 1960's, George Dean and John Whitmore formed several singing groups in the Memphis, TN area. However, in 1968, George and John, along Benjamin Ward and Robert Dean, started the powerhouse group that we know today, The Gospel Four. A young George composed several songs on the album. The second album was recorded on Gospel Message Records, with George further honing his writing skills.Signing with Memphis based, E & J Records, the group recorded four albums. The group's current home, MCG Records, gave George Dean and the Gospel Four the national platform that was part of God's plan in taking the group to a higher level.
