GEOFF LEWIS, EMERITUS Geoff Lewis holds a B.A. degree from Hobart College, Geneva, New York, and a M.A. degree in public administration from American University, Washington, D.C. He has been a Capitol Hill resident for more than 37 years and retired from federal service in 1997. Geoff has served on the boards of Capitol Hill Day School and the Capitol Hill Association of Merchants and Professionals (CHAMPS), as well as the Capitol Hill Village. He is a volunteer for Travelers Aid and a soup kitchen, and provides assistance to a veteran. His hobbies include bridge and tennis. He was the founding president of the Capitol Hill Village board of directors.

"My mother was in four of these type of assisted living arrangements -- 'Garden this' or something or other -- and she hated each one," said Geoff Lewis, president of Capitol Hill Village.
Lewis was intrigued by the Boston community, Beacon Hill Village, which was formed five years ago by residents 50 and over who want to remain in their homes. The group eschews such descriptions as retirement, senior community or aging in place. Beacon Hill Village now has 400 members, with the average age in the early 70s. Lewis began talking to friends, some of whom had read about Beacon Hill Village in an AARP newsletter.

Under the ample shade of the garden's stately water oak, the Shackbreakers blues band performed for the crowd, their tunes interspersed with remarks from CHV Board President Geoff Lewis, Executive Director Kohn, and Friendship House Director Nicolle Brown.
Lewis also thanked those who had helped CHV achieve its launch, as well as the sponsors and contributors who made the event possible.
