Geoff Budd
Geoff Budd Geoff Budd photo Working at the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and participating in its regional panels has given southern panellist Geoff Budd the opportunity to "make a difference" to the lives of others. Mr Budd, the GRDC's executive manager for legal and procurement, made a conscious choice to leave a career as a commercial lawyer in order to contribute to an industry with a lasting legacy. He sees the same opportunity on offer to grain producers in the form of participation in the GRDC regional panels. "I decided I wanted to do something that would develop our country and that I could be proud of when talking to my kids," Mr Budd said of his decision to join the GRDC almost 10 years ago. In Mr Budd's role at the GRDC he acts as the company secretary, provides advice on risk management and the issues surrounding intellectual property in plant breeding products, and has been crucial in the establishment of new corporate structures for the plant breeding programs. Mr Budd's duties also extend to ensuring proper corporate governance procedures are followed, and that the GRDC board continues to function effectively. As part of his role at the GRDC, Mr Budd has sat on the southern panel since 2009, which he says has been vital in broadening his perspective beyond Canberra and the GRDC's corporate affairs. "No-one has all the answers so it's really critical to have a mix of growers, researchers and industry people in there," Mr Budd said. Seeing a variety I was involved in commercialising some time ago; seeing that in a paddock and seeing how well it's working; talking with a grower and seeing what messages he has to give me and what improvements we need to make - that's all fantastic," Mr Budd said.
