Like most horseman, Gene Parker took an interest in horses at an early age. He started with a pony before graduating to horses. Gene started at open shows and even rode some racehorses at the local tracks when he was in high school. He kept his horses through college and started showing at the AQHA shows.

After graduating college, success in the show ring put him in the horse business. People started sending Gene horses when they saw the horses that he was training and conditioning.
He credits the Boston Mac son, Macs Limit with putting him on the map as a western pleasure trainer.
Gene Parker, who has held his AQHA judges card since 1979, has shown western pleasure, western riders, reiners and everything else.
Today, it's the conformation horses-halter horses-that command most of his attention. Parker was instrumental in the founding of the World Conformation Horse Association, and he currently serves on the judges and breeders committees of the WCHA. Although his professional interest has changed, he says his diverse show background serves him well with the conformation horses.
Gene Parker makes it a point to continue to pay it forward by sharing advice with the next generation of competitors. Parker's show background is quite diverse, and like most trainers, he got started with the all-around show horses.

ORRUM - Veteran horse trainer, exhibitor and judge, Gene Parker sits in a room back-dropped by walls filled with glossy trophies and casually explains how they got there.
"If you want to be competitive in the industry, you can't rest on what you've done in the past," says Parker, owner of Parker Farms in Orrum.
"It's a great honor," Parker said. "It's given once a year to one person out of thousands of professional horsemen."
Parker said that his grandfather had draft horses and mules, but he was the first in his family to take an interest in horses.
"At first it was a pony and then a horse," he said.
Anytime you can win Congress - that's the best it gets," Parker said.
In addition to training horses for over 30 years, Parker is also a judge for the American Quarter Horse Association, the World Conformation Horse Association and the National Snaffle Bit Association.
Everett Davis, the former director of the Robeson County Extension Office, has been friends with Parker for a long time.
"We took them to Gene Parker's place as part of the tour. People come away just amazed. They say, 'I never knew there was a place like that in Robeson and I never knew there were people like that in Robeson.'"
They're talking about Parker Farms where Parker, along with wife, Bobbie Parker, and seven employees, breeds and trains horses.
