Grab bag:?Fish shelter removal deadlines, moose, and happy retirement to Gene Merriam
Former DNR commissioners Gene Merriam and Mark Holsten at an appreciation gathering for Holsten on Feb. 1, 2011, just after he left the agency. Holsten had served as deputy commissioner under Merriam from 2003 to 2007.
One of my favorite people in public service, Gene Merriam, has retired from his role as president of the Freshwater Society. ABC?Newspapers has a fine article about Merriam, a former state senator and DNR?commissioner, here.
Merriam to the DNR?commissioner post. Four years later, Pawlenty named Merriam's deputy commissioner, Mark Holsten, to the top DNR?post, and Merriam gamely stepped aside.
When the Dayton administration brought its own people in four years later, I attended a going away party for Holsten, and Merriam was there, too.
The agency had a lousy relationship with the outdoor media during the Jesse Ventura years, and Merriam and Holsten both deserve credit for wiping the slate clean and being available to the outdoor press.

Gene Merriam- President of FWS Gene Merriam has been president of the Freshwater Society since late 2007. He was Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources from 2003 to 2007. He was chair of the successful coalition that helped dedicate state lottery funds to the Environmental Trust Fund. Merriam also served as chair of the Senate Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources Committee and the Senate Finance Committee. In August 2009, Gov. Tim Pawlenty appointed Merriam to the Clean Water Council, which advises the Legislature and governor.

Gene Merriam, Treasurer
Gene has returned for a second stint on MCEA's board after serving as the Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and as a State Senator. Gene also served as the appointed environmental representative on the Minnesota Forest Resources Council and is currently President of the Freshwater Society. He previously served on the MCEA Board of Directors from 1997 through 2002. Gene was important in the passage of many pieces of vital environmental legislation in Minnesota.

But former Department of Natural Resources Commissioner Gene Merriam, of the Freshwater Society, looks to the future of the Mississippi River and other waters with mixed emotions.
"It can vary day to day," Merriam, a member of the ECM Publishers board of directors, said of his belief in humanity's ability to live sustainably.
Still, history shows that commitment, good law and adequate resources can bring positive change.
"And the Mississippi is a good example," Merriam said.
Merriam portrays the agricultural industry as in denial in terms of acknowledging the threat current agricultural practices present to water.
