Throughout history, countless messianic movements have come and gone.
Gene Mayhew, a former St. Clair resident now living in Chesterfield Township, has compiled a 440-page encyclopedia of messiahs in Judaism, Samartanism and Islam -- a project that took him about 24 years.
Mayhew, a member of St. Clair High School's class of 1968, is a professor of Old Testament and Semitic Languages at Moody Theological Seminary in Plymouth.
The encyclopedia documents more than 122 Jewish, 11 Samaritan, and 32 Islamic messianic movements.
"There's just nothing like this out there," Mayhew said. "It really filled a gap."
As the work's primary author, Mayhew traveled to the Middle East more than 30 times to do research, interviews and gather more information. Graduate assistants at Moody Theological Seminary helped with the project.
"It covers the whole idea of who is the Messiah, and what individuals and movements there were through history that has been documented," Mayhew said.
Mayhew grew up attending the First Baptist Church of St. Clair with his family. After obtaining an undergraduate degree at William Tyndale College in Farmington Hills, Mayhew went on to earn a master's degree at Dallas Theological Seminary and a doctorate at Grace Seminary in Indiana in 1984.
Mayhew said he was first inspired to research messianic movements when he was digging around in the library as a college freshman. While pulling random books out of a section on the life of Jesus, Mayhew came across an introduction in one of the works that startled him.
"The introduction had this statement that by the time Jesus lived and ministered, there had been 30 to 40 messiahs before him," Mayhew said.
...
"His movement is still happening -- some expect him to come back to life," Mayhew said.
Mayhew followed a set of criteria to determine which messianic movements he wanted to include:
