State Office of Juvenile Affairs Director Gene Christian has announced that he will retire effective July 31.
Christian, 53, has been the agency's director since Sept. 1, 2006.
Christian previously worked as a district attorney, an assistant district attorney and a staff attorney for the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

Christian to retire from Office of Juvenile Affair

Office of Juvenile Affairs Executive Director Gene Christian announced today that he will be retiring from the agency on Aug. 1.
Christian made the announcement at the monthly meeting of the OJA Board of Directors.

In the coming weeks, OJA Director Christian will be meeting with OPEA and COJC staff to discuss the progress of improvements at the facility.

In the meeting, OJA Director Gene Christian discussed the options of securing the remaining OJA facilities including; seeking changes in the Terry D consent decree that restrict the use of restraints, allowing pepper spray and tasers, using armed officers, and capital improvements for more secure rooms.
In his comments to the Board, Director Christian commended OPEA’s statement and recommendation from COJC staff. Also, as part of his recommendations to the Board, he included a three percent pay increase for line staff and intensive efforts to hire more staff at COJC.
“We are pleased that Director Christian is recommending additional pay for staff, more employees at COJC, and capital improvements to provide locked rooms,†concluded Zearley. “In the coming weeks, OPEA will be working with Director Christian to improve the conditions for all employees and residents in the juvenile system.â€
The Director Gene Christian of the Office of Juvenile Affairs announced to employees today that the L.E. Rader Center would be closing September 30. The Rader Center has traditionally been the most secure state facility for more violent juvenile offenders.
