Gene Aanenson, a global education teacher at Red River High School who helped found an exchange program with Awano, Japan, received the 2005 Warren Kress Outstanding North Dakota Geography Teacher Award.Aanenson is a member of NDGA, has been president of the North Dakota Council for the Social Studies for the past seven years, and has worked with the North Dakota Curriculum Initiative for the past three years, according to a news release.He co-wrote and implemented a grant to establish a Japanese studies course at high schools in the Grand Forks area, and developed an Internet exchange program for students in Grand Forks and Awano, Japan.He coordinated the Grand Forks schools' exchange program with Awano and spent the 2001-2002 school year in Awano.He has participated in a history grant project for greater use of primary documents in the classroom, has worked on the schools' writing team for social studies standards, and has made frequent presentations to social studies methods classes and geography classes at UND to promote geography in the classroom."It is important that students learn to see relationships in the world around them," Aanenson wrote in a news release.
