Columbia Fire Department Battalion Chief Gary Warren said the department's training regimen played a significant role in the new ISO rating.
'It's not so much a particular training topic as it is revamping the way we are doing our training,' said Warren
, adding that more focus is being placed on measuring the outcome of training.
Additional night training, live-fire training and hazardous materials drills were part of the revamped training program.
An ISO evaluation in 2005 gave Columbia a score of 4.23 for training.
The new rating included a training score of 8.46.
