Gary Shepard was the first news correspondent to report the start of the Persian Gulf War , directly from Baghdad.In fact , President Bush , watching television at the White House , got the news from Shepard that the war had begun.Right on schedule , said the President , turning to an aide.
Shepard , a veteran war correspondent , won an Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for his live reporting from the Iraqi capitol.
After his assignment in Baghdad , Shepard covered the events immediately following the start of the war from Amman , Jordan , and later from Israel , where he described SCUD missile attacks on Tel Aviv.
During his 30 plus year career in broadcast journalism , Gary Shepard has reported on many of the major news events of our time , among them : the Vietnam War , the student rebellion in Beijing , China , the drug wars in Columbia , the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska.
He has covered the war in El Salvador , political upheaval in Guatemala and the Philippines , the U.S. military presence in Honduras.
Shepard has reported on the San Francisco earthquake in 1989 , the eruption of Mount St. Helen's in Washington and the decade long activity at the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii.
Prior to joining ABC News , Mr. Shepard worked for CBS News for 20 years , reporting on such events as the invasion of Cambodia , the assassination of Robert Kennedy , the funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King , Jr. , the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island , various political conventions and several NASA space missions.
Before CBS , Shepard was a reporter and anchor at WCAU Radio in Philadelphia from 1964 to 1966.He began his career as a writer , editor and assistant news director at WBZ-TV in Boston from 1961 to 1964.
A native of Troy , New York , Shepard graduated from Boston University in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History.
Mr. Shepard retired from ABC in 1997 but continues to monitor and speak on current events.
He currently lives in Malibu , California , and has two sons , Jamie and Chris.

At a little alter 6:30 p.m. EST on January 16, ABC News correspondent Gary Shepard in Baghdad gave American audiences the first indication that the war against Iraq had begun. In the middle of an interview with “World News Tonight� anchor Peter Jennings, Shepard interrupted Jennings to report that something was happening.
Lights were flashing above the city, tracer rounds from Iraqi anti-aircraft artillery which Shepard described as resembling “fireworks on the Fourth of July.� Distant explosions punctuated his narration.
