Hear from Dr. Gary Phetteplace, a PE and consulting engineer, on the fundamentals of geothermal system technology: how heat pumps work; ground as a heat source and sink; system types; case studies; design issues; expected performance, and the economics of a system.
Gary Phetteplace Dr. Phetteplace is a consulting engineer, specializing in HVAC and heat transfer, with GWA Research, LLC. He spent 32 years as a Research Mechanical Engineer with the US Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) in Hanover, NH. His research focused on the theory and practice of district heating and cooling, heat pump systems, numerical and analytical methods for approximating heat transfer in soil systems, and energy conversion. Dr. Phetteplace's ground-source and hybrid system demonstrations at Fort Polk, Louisiana paved the way for one of the largest and most successful ground-source heat pump projects in the world. He has done numerous projects and demonstrations around the United States involving ground-coupled, open-loop ground water, and primary effluent heat source systems. Dr. Phetteplace has also worked extensively with the Department of Defense (DoD) on ground-source heat pump projects and has been a consultant for various interests in the District Heating and Cooling and Ground-Source Heat Pump fields. Dr. Phetteplace enjoys sharing his professional experiences and expertise in geothermal technology in the classroom as an instructor, especially for new and enthusiastic audiences. He demonstrates that this technology can be designed and installed cost-effectively while dramatically reducing a building's environmental footprint. Moreover, he explains that geothermal heat pumps continue to rise in demand because of their low life cycle costs and strong reliability when compared against other technologies.
