Gary Phetteplace constructed a heat transfer and energy model that simulated the instrument shelter operation given climatic data.

Cold Regions Heat Transfer
Experience
Gary Phetteplace has extensive experience in cold regions heat transfer. Much of this has dealt with buried utilities (see our Heat Transfer in Soil Systems page) but he also has experience in building envelope systems in cold and extreme cold climates. Gary Phetteplace developed the methods and systems used successfully in temperatures down to -50 °F to conduct several infrared surveys of the building envelope at the US South Pole Station, Antarctica. Gary Phetteplace has also been involved in cold regions heat transfer as it applies to humans. He was part of the oversight group for development of the new wind chill factors and has also done work on cold weather impacts on the performance of humans. He developed and taught in part the University of Alaska - Anchorage's graduate course ME A685, Arctic Heat and Mass Transfer.

In district heating and cooling (DHC) Gary Phetteplace's contributions and experience span his entire 34+ year career. He has developed several models for optimal design of DHC systems and has conducted a number of field studies that have instrumented and measured the performance of both existing and new distribution systems. Gary Phetteplace either acted as the principal investigator or a participant in extensive field forensics programs of the Department of Defense (DoD) spanning 25 years. These efforts included approximately 100 excavations of operating systems. He was an adviser to the Federal Agency Committee for Underground Heat Distribution Systems from late 1970's until the committee's dissolution in approximately 2000. In addition to all branches of DoD and the Veterans Administration, Gary Phetteplace has acted as a paid consultant to EPA, DoE, NASA, and numerous private entities on heat distribution systems. He has contributed to many DoD guide specifications for construction and procurement and has authored major sections of some of these documents. Gary Phetteplace has been the long-standing editor and Handbook Committee Chairman for American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Technical Committee TC6.2, District Heating and Cooling. In that capacity he contributed all the thermal and hydraulic analysis sections as well as other portions for many past editions and the current 2008 edition of the ASHRAE Handbook, HVAC Systems and Equipment Volume, Chapter 11.

A team lead by GWA Research LLC was selected by ASHRAE to author design guides for DHC and District Cooling.
Gary Phetteplace has done expert witness work in the areas of thermal damage, heat loss assessment, and standard of care in design and construction of heat distribution systems.

Gary Phetteplace has acted as an expert witness on several lawsuits involving allegations of thermal damage to adjacent utilities from buried steam pipelines.

Gary Phetteplace has been working on heat transfer problems in soils, primarily associated with buried utilities, since 1978. His work has included development of finite element models for conduction heat transfer as well as many programs where field measurements were made for verification of computational procedures. He has extensive experience in instrumenting all types of buried heat distribution systems (direct buried, trench type, and utilidor/tunnel) using steam and high/medium/low temperature hot water as the carrier fluid. Gary Phetteplace has also conducted work in the area of frost shielding of buried water and sewer pipelines using rigid extruded polystyrene insulation. Gary Phetteplace developed the consistent set of heat transfer relations that are contained in Chapter 11 - District Heating and Cooling of the 2008 (and many past versions as well) of the ASHRAE HVAC Systems and Equipment Handbook.
