At this point a third San Diego officer, Gary E. Mitrovich, 26, a 4-year veteran, arrived on the scene. He heard the two officers on the radio describe the situation, as it existed before the shooting began, and decided to drive to that location. From a block away he heard gunshots and at the scene he saw two parked police vehicles but was unable to see Ruopp or Tonahill.

As he stepped from his car he saw two men in the nearby darkness.

About Gary Mitrovich
Gary Mitrovich is a third-generation native of San Diego and an active member of the San Diego Police Department since 1980. Mitrovich helped establish San Diego Police Historical Association in 1997, of which he is Vice President. In 1984, he received the SDPD's highest honor, the medal for Valor, for aiding in the capture of a man who had murdered two fellow officers. He grew upâ€"and still residesâ€"in what used to be the city of East San Diego.

Gary E. Mitrovich is a third-generation native of San Diego. He joined the San Diego Police Department in 1980 and served the city for nearly 33 years, retiring in 2012. Gary is one of the founding members of the San Diego Police Historical Association, established in 1997, and helped to open the San Diego Police Museum in 2009. Though he grew up in East San Diego and lived there most of his adult life, Gary currently resides in Lakeside.
