"They're trained to do exactly that - pick people out of a crowd," Gary Milano, federal security director for the TSA's Tampa office, said today.
These officers don't have the power to arrest but are uniformed behavioral experts, Milano said. The TSA and the U.S. Secret Service trained about 70 Tampa police officers and Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies working the event in their techniques. Milano described them as "telltale signs of people about to engage in wrongdoing" based on the Israeli security system. Each behavior, such as profuse sweating, could be innocent on its own but raises eyebrows when coupled with other behaviors, Milano said. He declined to elaborate.

TAMPA, FL--(Marketwire - October 11, 2007) - The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has named Gary Milano as the federal security director for Tampa International, Sarasota Bradenton International and St. Petersburg-Clearwater International airports. Milano joined TSA in 2002 as the federal security director for Syracuse-Hancock International and six other airports in New York. "Gary has a record of real success in his five years with TSA," said Mo McGowan, TSA's assistant administrator for Security Operations."His leadership and experience will serve him well as he continues with the agency in Florida." Before joining TSA, Milano worked for the U.S. Department of Justice for 15 years in a variety of positions that included assistant U.S. attorney for the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of New Hampshire.As chief of the Criminal Division, he supervised every federal prosecutor in New Hampshire.Prior to that, he was a trial attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice, Criminal Division, Washington, D.C., and an assistant district attorney in the Bronx District Attorney's Office, New York City. Milano holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy, a master's degree in American history, and a Doctor of Law degree, all from St. John's University.
