In Service Public service was important to Gary Griffith long before he was elected to the Dallas City Council.
,I like the challenge of solving community problems and the opportunity to make Dallas a better city,, Griffith said. ,I,m glad the people of District 9 have given me the opportunity to work for them and the city as a whole.,
In his first campaign for public office, he won an open seat in a runoff in 2003 and was re-elected in 2005.He currently serves on the council,s finance, audit and accountability; quality of life; and public safety committees. He previously served East Dallas on the City Planning and Zoning Commission and the Dallas Park and Recreation Board.Born in Fort Worth, Griffith moved to Dallas at age 3.He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and earned a bachelor,s degree in government, with a minor in sociology, from the University of Texas at Austin. After graduation, he taught at Julius Dorsey Elementary in Pleasant Grove for a year and then taught history and sociology at South Oak Cliff High School the following year. Then he was recruited by his fraternity to serve as vice president of operations at the Richmond, Va.
, headquarters. He returned to Dallas in 1975, serving first as deputy director for the Republican Party of Dallas County and then as public information officer for the Dallas County sheriff,s office. After next working for the campaigns of Senator John Tower and Governor Bill Clements, Griffith joined the Southern Methodist University staff, first as director of corporate giving and then as director of the SMU Alumni Association. ,I was the first non-Mustang to hold that position,, he said.Moving to the private sector, he became the first director of communications for the Trammell Crow Company. ,It was important to get private-sector experience with a strong company,, he said. After six years, Griffith joined an advertising agency but was soon hired as director of communications and human resources by one of its clients, Epic Healthcare. When the company was bought in 1994, he opened his own public relations practice, specializing in community-relations programming for non-profit and for-profit companies focused on education programs and initiatives. Now, however, Griffith spends 80 percent of his time on city council matters. Griffith was baptized at age 16 at First United Methodist Church of Dallas. For a number of years, he was an active member of Highland Park United Methodist, where the senior pastor, Leighton Farrell, was a mentor. He served on the administrative board, was a member of the Missions Committee, and helped lead youth mission trips to Puerto Rico and Costa Rica.
Griffith especially appreciates Wilshire,s worship style and missions programs. ,You have to go a long way to find a service that is as wonderful as ours, especially the music, such as the Wilshire Winds, and so much outreach in so many ministries,, he said.In addition, he values Wilshire,s reputation in the community. ,I have appreciated George Mason being so willing to represent the church in the life of the city of Dallas,, he said. ,Wilshire is a very important faith community leader in the city. That,s part of what brought me to Wilshire.,I want to do a better job, of being part of the church,s outreach to the city, he added, and ,connecting the church and the city., :: View topic - Dallas Mayor Laura Miller Won't Run for Re-Election, 17 Mar 2000 [cached]

Gary Griffith has an SMU connection, he was instrumental in starting the SMU chapter of SigEp, but to my knowledge hasn't been involved lately.
