...Gary Lee Evans, 46, of 1909 Munos, Jonesboro, was arrested Friday on the parking lot of Indian Mall as he reported for work at Sears. Evans
is charged with killing Abe Pipkin, 71, a night officer in Beebe, who died the morning of April 5, 1977, of injuries sustained in a beating.
On Oct. 22, 1978, Evans
was charged in Craighead County Circuit Court with burglary, but the offense was reduced to criminal mischief in the second-degree.In November 1980 Evans
was given a 10-year suspended sentence and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and restitution to the Children's Colony (now Human Development Center). Evans
admitted to police that he
committed four burglaries at a pharmacy located at 1327 Stone St., Jonesboro, on Aug. 21, 1976; Oct. 19, 1978; Oct. 21, 1978; and Sept. 27, 1979.He
was not charged with the offenses, Craighead County Circuit Court documents showed. Jonesboro Police Department records indicate Evans
also admitted, but was not charged, with the Jan. 13, 1977, burglary of the former Craighead Memorial Hospital Pharmacy and for burglaries at Lee's Drug Store in the Southgate Plaza on Feb. 5, 1976; Aug. 21, 1976; May 28, 1978; and Oct. 22, 1978. Other burglaries Evans admitted to, but with which he
was not charged included: Dr. Hermie Plunk's office, 5005 East Nettleton Ave., on Jan. 4, 1975; June 19, 1975; and Sept. 11, 1978.Also, police records indicate that Evans
admitted to five burglaries at the Plaza Pharmacy, 3100 Apache Drive, which occurred on Oct. 8, 1979; Sept. 10, 1979; Aug. 19, 1979, Feb. 19, 1979; and Jan. 21, 1979. When Evans was a student at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, police records show that he was arrested and questioned for the burglaries of Collier's Drug East in Fayetteville on March 26, 1977; April 1, 1977 and April 24, 1977.
A spokesman for the Washington County Circuit Clerk's Office
at Fayetteville said court records do not indicate that Evans
was ever charged with the crimes. However, Evans
was charged in the Dec. 28, 1985, burglary of Horton's Drug Store in Harrisburg. Arkansas Department of Correction records revealed that Evans
was sentenced to five years in prison in Poinsett County Circuit Court on March 17, 1986, for the Horton's Drug Store burglary. A spokesman for the ADC
was released from prison on the burglary charge on Nov. 13, 1987.
