Biography

Gary Calabrese joined Corning Incorporated in February 2008 as vice president, Science & Technology. In this position, he was responsible for a portfolio of new business opportunities for a variety of high-tech markets. In November 2009, he took on the role of director, Photovoltaic Glass Technologies. In this role, he was responsible for continuing to strengthen Photovoltaic’s value proposition and growing this new business. In December 2010, he was named senior vice president, and in January 2011, he was appointed senior vice president, New Business Development. In this role, he led Corning’s Photovoltaic Glass Technologies program and assumed responsibility for other developing businesses, including Gorilla® Glass Adjacencies in the automobile and appliance industries, Reactor Technologies, Ultracapacitors, and additional New Business Development programs. In May 2012, Dr. Calabrese was named senior vice president, Global Research. In this role, he is responsible for leading research for Corning around the world. Dr. Calabrese began his professional career at Polaroid Corporation in 1983 as a research chemist. Two years later, he joined Allied-Signal’s Health and Scientific Products Division as a research group leader. In 1989, he joined Shipley Company, where he was responsible for advanced chip lithography research. In 1992, Shipley became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rohm and Haas, and in 1994 Dr. Calabrese was named North American director of engineering, responsible for scaling up manufacturing processes for new products, customer technical support and plant engineering. He returned to research in 1997 as global R&D director for Microelectronic Materials, and was named vice president and chief technology officer for Rohm and Haas Electronic Materials two years later. In 2002, he became head of the Rohm and Haas corporate research laboratory, and was named vice president and chief technology officer for the entire corporation in 2003. In this role, he was responsible for the corporate research lab, as well as over 2,000 technologists worldwide in Rohm and Haas’ three major business groups. He also helped establish the company’s Executive Growth Board that increased the number of new products and businesses outside existing product lines. Dr. Calabrese earned a B.S. in chemistry from Lehigh University, and his Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He is a past advisor to the Council for Chemical Research, Chemical and Engineering News, and co-chair of the National Academies’ Board on Chemical Sciences and Technology. He currently serves on the American Chemical Society Presidential Commission on the future of graduate education in the Chemical Sciences and as an advisory board member on Cornell University’s Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. He is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Dr. Calabrese is an inventor on 11 patents and has authored two dozen technical publications.
