Their tour was guided by Galen Dillman, recently retired from the Bank of America and now serving as a docent for the National Park Service. The cemetery, which is maintained by the Veterans Administration, was the first national cemetery established west of the Mississippi. There are 28,000 U.S. servicemen and servicewomen buried in the Presidio; thirty-five of those individuals were recipients of the nation's highest military decoration: the Congressional Medal of Honor.
