A series of Caliper dedications: Gail Smith
The first honoree on the regular program at the gala was Gail Smith
At the time Caliper was founded, Mr. Smith was vice president of merchandising for General Motors.
I don't even remember how, but by some miracle we were able to obtain an appointment with Gail Smith, the vice president of merchandising for General Motors.
looked at our data, he
asked us the question so many others had asked, "How do I know you didn't make up these numbers?"
studied the data a bit longer and said, "For all I know, you're the smartest liars I ever met, or maybe you're smart enough to have created something that does what you say it does.
told us, "Let me look at this for awhile and see which division is hurting enough to try this crap."
We walked out not knowing if this was a win or another loss.
Two weeks later the phone rang.
It was Gail Smith
said, "Can you be in Detroit on Monday morning?
died recently, but we were thankful to be able to honor him at our celebration through his son Richard Smith.
