Dr. Gabriela Lemus is the Senior Advisor and Director of the Office of Public Engagement at the U.S. Department of Labor, appointed in 2009. She also represents the DOL at the Senior Policy Operating Group on Trafficking in Persons, the President's Task Force on Puerto Rico's Status, and various inter-agency working groups on immigration policy. Prior to her current appointment, Dr. Lemus was the first woman to hold the position of Executive Director at the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement as well as the first woman to chair the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda.
She served terms on the advisory boards of the Washington Office on Latin America and the U.S. Labor Education in the Americas Project and was Director of Policy and Legislation at the League of United Latin American Citizens where she launched the LULAC Democracy Initiative, a national Hispanic civic participation campaign. Dr. Lemus has been an adjunct professor of international relations and border policy at the University of Memphis, San Diego State University, and the University of San Diego, as well as a guest scholar at the University of California, San Diego's Center for U.S.-Mexico Studies. Under both the Clinton and Bush administrations, she traveled to Latin America to lecture on democracy and civil society participation.
