Then credit tightened, and bank turn-downs became commonplace, while loan programs disappeared. "The worst years were '09, '10, and '11," Finn says.

If there's a chance that what they don't know could stop them from selling that homeowner, then I want them to pick up the phone, Finn says. Though some homeowners may view the rep's sudden recourse to a manager on the phone with suspicion, Finn says that his reps should feel free to call in the middle of the appointment, and many do. We live in a cell-phone society, he says. If I worked in a retail store and a customer asked a question I couldn't answer, I'd say: Let me get the manager.' When sales reps don't call, Finn says, it's often because they presented a price.

"For the first time in 17 years," says Fred Finn, president of Euro-Tech, a window and siding company in Illinois, "I didn't know if our business was going to be there or not.
As the fall of 2008 wore on, veteran closers were having a hard time bringing in deals. Leads "just would not convert," Finn says. He blames at least part of the company's troubles on the election. But the bigger villain in his eyes were the media, eager to spread news of calamity. For three months Euro-Tech's production "went off a cliff," Finn says. The reason? Consumer fear. Often, of losing their jobs.

It's becoming a little more mainstream, says Fred Finn, EuroTech's president and co-owner. The easiest way to describe it, Finn says, is that it's face-to-face telemarketing.
