Capitalizing On a Slowing E-commerce Environment
According to Eastman executive Fred Buehler, the immediate goal of the project wasn't to save money but rather to build customer loyalty.
"Inevitably cost savings will come through fewer customer service calls, but we implemented these features because they are what we would want if we were customers," he says.

"Companies are skeptical of anything new that comes along," says Fred Buehler, director of e-business at Eastman Chemicals. "This program takes humans out of the routine," says Buehler."If a customer wants a truckload of Product A, Integrated Direct handles the transaction automatically, ERP to ERP."The program started with the narrow goal of automating purchase orders and will expand to include other types of transactions, says Buehler.But the chemical industry has a long way to go before it reaches the levels of visibility required for true supply-chain collaboration."Collaborative forecasting is still a dream in this industry," says Buehler."Our current strategy is focused on solving customer problems."Preventing universal connectivity in Eastman's case is WebMethods' lack of compatibility with midmarket ERP systems as well as the lack of an ERP implementation among some of Eastman's trading partners.Although Buehler believes that his industry has been a technological "laggard," he is effusive about future developments."There are opportunities to derive value from inventory efficiencies," he says.
