Former Hospice Chaplain Fred Brason II knew how important opioids were for relieving pain at the end of life, but when faced with consoling the family members of overdose victims, he saw the need for a program to prevent prescription drug overdoses while ensuring pain medication for patients who need it.

When Brason brought the Project Lazarus program to Wilkes County, his first challenge was to get the community to admit there was a problem.
