Owner, Manhattan RadioShack
Frank Beer
Frank Beer, owner of the local RadioShack and active member of the Manhattan community, has always struggled with his weight. Beer made the decision to make his quest to lose weight a fundraising competition, with benefits going to the Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research, after viewing the popular reality TV series, "The Biggest Loser." He approached long-time friend, Dave Lewis, with his plan and they agreed they could both use a little help in the fight to change their lifestyle.
Beer is looking forward to the competition being just the "kick in the pants" he needs to get with a fitness program and stick to it. His wife and four children are a big part of his motivation to get healthy; an active lifestyle with them is something he'd like to enjoy well into his later years.
Outside of the responsibilities of managing his store, Beer has served as the chair of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce Retail Committee and as a member of the Chamber board of directors. He currently sits on the board of directors for RSVP of the Flint Hills, a United Way agency, and Leadership Manhattan. He graduated from the Leadership Manhattan program in 2003. He was also a driving force behind the Manhattan 24/7 campaign to promote Manhattan as a regional trade area, and the recipient of the Chamber's volunteer of the year award in 2007.
Lewis has long been a customer of Beer's Radio Shack store.

"The iPod is not the best dollar for dollar," said Frank Beer, owner of Manhattan Radio Shack, located at 614 Fort Riley Blvd. "There are other models and companies out there that are better, but in the image set, the name is all that matters." Beer said iPods are not poor-operating MP3 players, but that he encourages people who are considering purchasing MP3 players to be aware there are other brands on the market just as good or better than iPod in providing music, interactivity, storage space and compatibility.

Beer said Apple controls more than 70 percent of the MP3 player market with its advertising campaign and the iTunes store that is geared specifically toward iPods, despite the fact that any MP3 player can download songs from iTunes.
