Meet the Choir Leadership | North Star Boys' Choir
Francis D.C. Stockwell, Artistic Director, and a New Zealander by birth, holds concert diplomas for pianoforte from the Trinity College of Music, London, as well as a bachelor of Arts degree in music and languages from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand.
Mr. Stockwell studied voice in Vienna, Austria under Professor Ingrid Doll-Kallinger while working with the Vienna Boys' Choir. Mr. Stockwell assumed the post of Artistic Director for the North Star Boys' Choir in October of 2011.
The North Star Boys' Choir, under the direction of Mr. Francis Stockwell, is composed of twenty-four boys aged 8-13.
The choir is devoted to the traditional boy choir repertoire including sacred music of all periods, classical works, spirituals, and folk music from around the world. The hauntingly beautiful sound of the North Star Boys' Choir results, in large part, from the centuries-old European voice training technique which Mr. Stockwell mastered while working in Vienna, Austria. Mr. Stockwell is one of a handful of voice trainers around the world who has preserved and currently practices this technique. The North Star Boys' Choir was founded, in part, to provide an enduring American home for this rare and beautiful legacy. Although the choir itself is new, the majority of the choristers are experienced and seasoned singers, having toured Europe and participated in international choral competitions. Providing a well-rounded experience for the choirboys is a significant part of the program, and is realized through a wide range of recreational and character-building opportunities, including choir camp, national and international tours, and competitions. Training is provided in manners, deportment, and leadership, which readies the boys for success in concert and tour settings, as well as in future life. Francis Stockwell, born in New Zealand, is the Artistic Director of the North Star Boys' Choir. Stockwell studied piano in Geneva and Lucerne, Switzerland, and voice at the Hochschule fur Musik in Vienna, Austria, under Prof. Ingrid Doll-Kallinger.
