Recently, the forward gun tub on the American Victory was dedicated to the memory of Francis Merle Hendry, a Port of Tampa visionary who founded the Hendry Corporation, which today is operated by Francis' son, Aaron. Following service in the US Navy, Francis Hendry entered the US Merchant Service and served aboard Standard Oil Company tankers for many years.Leaving Standard Oil in 1924, he devoted the remainder of his life to operating his company, which played a pivotal role in Port of Tampa history.Captain Hendry, who ‘passed over the bar' in November 1968, was a charter commissioner of the Tampa Port Authority and served as its first chairman. Alexis Hendry, founder of Marine Metal Works and Francis Hendry's granddaughter, donated design services for a replica gun tub.
