Floyd Everett "Honey" Dabney Sr., proprietor of the F. E. Dabney Funeral Home, Ashland, departed this life Jan. 30, 2006.He was born Oct. 21, 1920, to the late Henry W. and Estelle Dabney.He leaves to cherish his fond memories his wife, Henrietta Catherine; one son, Floyd Jr.; a devoted granddaughter, Terrica; four other grandchildren, Jessica, Amanda, Joshua and Amber; two great-grandchildren, Makayla and Jeremiah; one sister, Mable Anderson; two brothers, Wilbur (May) and Columbus; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.Floyd was a longtime member of the Shiloh Baptist Church.Floyd graduated from Hanover Training School and served in the United States Army.He was a WWII veteran, having served in General Patton's All-Black Tank Battalion, the first African American tank unit.After an honorable military career, he began his career in the funeral service.He attended and graduated from Eckel's College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1947.He was licensed by the state of Virginia, in May 1953, as a certified embalmer and funeral director.He founded the F. E. Dabney Funeral Home over 50 years ago and owned and operated the business until his death.He has been honored many times by the Virginia Funeral Director's Association for his dedicated work in the funeral business.Floyd also owned and operated a cab service for a number of years.He served many people in the community as a businessman and will be sorely missed.
