From the art world which is furthest away from that of cans of spray paint, Fernando Francés, the director of the Contemporary Art Centre (CAC), defines vandalism as "everything which is done to someone else's property," but he distinguishes between urban art and graffiti. "Urban art is everything that is generated in a public environment; what happens is that when these types of art are only signatures or doodles with no artistic focus it is graffiti," says the art centre director who, although he considers the 'golden painter' to be an artist (some of the stones he painted are in the CAC), insists that "every citizen has to comply with the regulations." However, he is calling for "the laws to be readapted to the circumstances" and wants a programme to be developed between artists and institutions.

The director of the CAC, Fernando Francés, talks very highly of Yan Pei-Ming, labelling him "the best Chinese artist, one of the great French artists... and one of the best in the world." He is also a likable, humorous man: he agreed - at the request of the photographers - to imitate some of his own works of art on display. However, the exhibition itself has a somewhat more serious tone. The collection of 26 large canvases, some of them up to four metres tall, hanging in the CAC's main hall, reflects the artist's attitudes towards the world's big problems: the scars left by war; the pain of its victims. He also shares his fascination with the theme of death, even including a 'Self-portrait in the morgue'. A large part of the exhibition looks at individuals in portraits.

According to Fernando Francés, Director of the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga, "In her painting, Anne Berning seeks to provoke a reaction to the phenomenon of the visual that confronts society today.
According to Fernando Francés, the exhibition curator and Director of CAC Málaga, Whiteread "has invented reality from its most simple essence, isolating it, removing it far from everything around it and from what is superficial to it, even, according to the canons of her own gaze, unnecessary.
It represents the air in the room, freezing it in all corners of the space, reflecting every imperfection of the flaking walls, every texture and all the elements that form its skin: frames, doors, lintels, etc. Reflecting on this, Fernando Francés writes that: "We all know that air occupies the interior of empty containers, jars, the empty spaces left in libraries by books, a bedroom… We are all aware that this is a fact, but we have never been able to appreciate its presence without the ‘cast' that embraces it.
In his text for the exhibition catalogue, CAC Málaga director Fernando Francés confesses that, of all the artists that have moved him, Ron Mueck is perhaps the only one to have done so by modifying reality towards exaggeration, whether by defect or through excess.
According to Francés, Mueck's works "generate a surprising provocation in the viewer's gaze, and they do so not only by the dramatic quality and the coldness that his figures reflect and represent, but also by their modification of the established, the way they break the laws of balance, changing the natural status of people and things".
The Marriage of Reason and Squalor has been curated by Fernando Francés, head of CAC Málaga and comprises a group of ten works made between 2000 and 2004.
