Dr. Ferna Phillips, Ph.D Vocational Counselor
Dr. Ferna L. Phillips received her BA in History from Salem State University and her Master of Education degree in Counseling from Suffolk University. She also holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Counseling Psychology from Boston College.
Dr. Phillips is a committed Christian who brings her extensive gifts and talents to the faith sector. She is very involved in the life of her church as well as the community. She is an Ordained Deacon at the Massachusetts Avenue Baptist Church, Cambridge, MA. She served as their Treasurer for two years and was a member of the Trustee Board for over twelve years. She is currently responsible for teaching new members class and has been the Coordinator and Chairperson of the Women's Ministry/Fellowship. She is a member of the Massachusetts Association of Baptist Deacons and Deaconesses. She also serves as a delegate to the Samuel Stillman Association of The American Baptist Churches of Massachusetts (TABCOM) and participated on and in numerous ordination council hearings.
Dr. Phillips is an experienced administrator and educator. She has spent her career in leadership positions in both public and higher education. She is an adjunct professor at Boston University and serves as a Site Supervisor for prospective undergraduate student teachers at the university. At Boston College, she was the Director of the Office of Learning Resources for Student-Athletes, where she provided academic advisement, career services, personal and educational counseling primarily to undergraduate students. The university received continuous national recognition for outstanding graduation rates and program development while under her supervision. She has also been a mentor and supervisor to many graduate students pursuing masters and doctoral degrees and has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in the areas of Higher Educational Administration and Educational Leadership. She has also been and continues to be an educational consultant for program development and evaluation to colleges and universities in the Greater Boston area.
Dr. Phillips is a native Bostonian and is very interested in local history. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Boston Women's Heritage Trail. She enjoys assisting on the guided tours and learning new facts about the City of Boston and the place of women in its history. She is also a member of the Board of Directors - Big Brother Big Sister Association of Massachusetts Bay.

Dr. Ferna L. Phillips, the Director holds a doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Boston College, a Master's degree in Education with a concentration in Counseling from Suffolk University and earned her Bachelor's degree in History from Salem State College, Salem, MA.Dr. Phillips is currently in her fifth year as the Director of the office.She served as the Associate Director of the office since its inception in 1984 and began her employment career at Boston College as an Assistant Director of Financial Aid.Previously she has served as Director of Counseling and Interim Director for the African-American Institute at Northeastern University; Community Education Coordinator for the Boston Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity (METCO), and a teacher in the Boston public school system.
Dr Phillips has taught a course entitled "How to Play the College Game" a freshman study skills seminar at Boston College.Dr. Phillips served as President of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A) and currently serves on the Executive Board as the Historian for the organization.She was awarded the Distinguished Service award from the organization in June, 2003.Dr. Phillips was also selected as Outstanding Alumni for Salem State College for 2003.Dr Phillips has two sons Gregory, Jr. and Jason Phillips and is married to Leo Osgood, Jr., Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
