In November, Gemayel managed to secure the replacement of LF chief Fadi Frem by his nephew Fouad Abu Nader, a move that Syria's state-run daily Al-Thawra hailed as a success for "moderation as represented by the president."1 As Christian opposition to Gemayel intensified, Pakradouni aligned himself with a dissident faction of the LF (the "Movement of Christian Decision"), led by Samir Geagea and Elie Hobeiqa, who sidelined Abu Nader and quickly took control over most of east Beirut and Christian areas of Mount Lebanon in March 1985.
