Ewa Bednarczuk, ecology and stewardship specialist at the Lower Trent Conservation, is promoting the health benefits of trees during the LTC's annual seedling sale.
Or just having trees outside your window and being able to look at them can reduce your stress levels," said Ewa Bednarczuk, ecology and stewardship specialist at the LTC. "There have been studies done with people in hospitals, where people who had a view of trees and some natural areas through the window recovered faster than people who were looking at a wall."
Bednarczuk said some studies have also shown that children with Attention Deficit Disorder are outside in nature, their symptoms are less severe.
"It helps reduce anxiety," she said.
Bednarczuk can also help educate residents on what type of trees are best for their land.
"If its a really sandy, dry area something like Oaks would be better in those conditions, compared to a low-lying area where something like a Silver Maple would do much better," she said.
This year, the LTC can also help with the cost of trees for landowners who want to plant native species along a stream, river, lake or pond. Grants up to $500 are available through the Healthy Shorelines Clean Water Program. This new grant program is funded through the RBC Blue Water Project, a program initiated to help foster a culture of water stewardship in Canada.
For more information or to order seedlings, contact Ewa Bednarczuk at the Lower Trent Conservation at 613-394-3915 ext. 252.
