Evan A. Crawley Sr., 90
...Evan A. Crawley Sr., 90, Greencastle, died Friday morning at Asbury Towers, Greencastle.
Born May 5, 1912 in Greencastle, he
was the son of Charles C. and Lura Mae (Fitchett) Crawley. A 1930 Greencastle High School graduate, he attended DePauw University.
On Jan. 30, 1931, he
married Gwendolyn C. Thompson, and she
survives. He served as mayor of Greencastle from 1952-1960, during which time he was instrumental in bringing IBM Corp. to Greencastle. With his father, he co-founded CCC Music Co. in 1935, introducing the jukebox to Putnam County.He
later operated the campus restaurant, the Subway Grill. In 1960 he was the U.S. Census director for the 7th Congressional District. Later he was a salesman for Lafayette Investments Co. for five years and then a salesman and installer for King School Equipment Co. in Danville until his retirement. After retirement, he served on many church and civic committees.
In 1991 he
ran for City Council at age 79. He was a member of Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church and the Greencastle Kiwanis Club.
In addition to his
wife, survivors include three sons, Evan A. Crawley Jr., Logansport, Richard T. Crawley, Ft. Lauderdale, and John C. Crawley, Indianapolis; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by his
parents and two brothers, Marion L. Crawley and Charles Crawley Jr.
Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle
